Fish is among the favorites of many people around world. We love to cook fishes like tuna and salmon using different cooking techniques. Fish is generally nutritious and good for the body. It contains nutrients such as protein that our body needs to remain healthy. One way to cook fish is by grilling. Although we are used to hearing chicken or pork meat being grilled but nowadays, a lot of people make grilling fish part of their weekend plan.
When grilling fish, there are a couple of things that one should consider. To start with, it is important that you choose the right fish to grill. Not all fishes are suitable for grilling because there are those that tend to get dry fast. Walleye is an example of a fish that is a bit difficult to grill although choosing thick cuts of this kind can somewhat help make grilling easier.
Fishes that are best for grilling include trout and salmon because they are oily and can retain their moisture when grilled. Whole fishes, fillets and steaks can be grilled and as a general rule grilling should be 8-10 minutes per inch of thickness. Grilling takes longer for whole fishes.
If you have chosen a fish that is lean or easily breaks up, you can wrap the fish in a foil before placing it on the grate. You can also use a grilling basket or a grilling screen.
Before grilling you can also marinate your fish and let it stand for several hours for a more flavorful fish. Make sure the grate is clean so that the fish will not stick. To prevent sticking, add oil to your cooking surface or sprinkle oil to your fish then while grilling you can add oil from time to time to avoid the fish from drying.
For whole fishes, you can add lemons inside for a more delightful taste. Moreover, you can sprinkle it with salt, pepper or any ingredient you like to add flavor to it.
The difficult part when grilling is to know whether the fish is already cooked or not. It is already cooked if the flakes come out when you use a fork in the center of the fish. When grilling turn the fish on the other when it is already flaky and monitor it every 5 minutes then wait for another 3 minutes before taking it off the grill when done cooking.
Make sure your grilled fish is not undercooked or overcooked. Undercooked fish or even meat can cause upset stomach and to a higher degree food poisoning. Meanwhile, an overcooked fish will have burnt parts which may contain carcinogens that may result to cancer in the long run.
